HUB PEN MOVES UP TOP 50 SUPPLIERS LIST
The company jumps from No. 44 to No. 38 in the annual ranking compiled by Promo Marketing magazine.
BRAINTREE, MASSACHUSETTS (August 5, 2011) – Hub Pen Company has moved from No. 44 to No. 38 on Promo Marketing magazine’s annual list of the Top 50 Suppliers, which is determined by annual sales figures. The company’s sales grew from $24.7 million in 2009 to $30.5 million in 2010.
The multi-million-dollar growth Hub Pen is experiencing in an otherwise flat market is the result of a controlled growth plan the company put in place four years ago. In addition to moving into a new facility, reinvesting in systems and expanding capacity by more than 50 percent, the company added 15 new field sales reps and increased staff in customer service, quality control, graphics and management. Today, Hub Pen has 225 employees and produces more than 100 million pens annually.
Joe Fleming, Hub Pen president, believes the company’s success is two-fold. “Because we specialize in one product category, we can focus exclusively on the quality of the writing experience so that using our pens is enjoyable,” he said. “Additionally, writing instruments are utilitarian in nature and they haven’t been as affected by the soft economy as many other promotional products categories.”
While the usefulness of writing instruments attracts more buyers, it also attracts more competition. “The writing instruments category is highly competitive, and one of the ways to combat this is to develop a loyal customer base through delivering exceptional product quality, design and functionality on time and with superior customer service,” he said. “Hub Pen continues to be a family business, and everyone in the company takes ownership in their part of the process. We believe in this philosophy—and it seems to be working for us.”
Moving up the list from No. 44 to No. 38 is a great achievement, but Fleming says there’s always more that can be done. “We’re extremely grateful for the success we have, and being included on Promo Marketing’s list with the industry’s top suppliers is an honor we don’t take lightly,” he said. “We will continue to work hard for our distributor customers, focusing on their success, and hope to continue moving up the list in the future.”
