HUB PEN NAMED A COUNSELOR TOP 40 SUPPLIER
With a $5 million boost in sales from 2009 to 2010, the company reaches the No. 40 spot on the coveted list.
BRAINTREE, MASSACHUSETTS (June 23, 2011) – Hub Pen Company has been named a Counselor Top 40 Supplier, a designation that was bestowed last month at The ASI Show San Diego. Inclusion is based on gross annual sales as reported by more than 3000 industry suppliers. Hub Pen made the list at No. 40 with $30.5 million in sales for 2010, up more than $5 million compared to 2009. This is the first time the company has been listed.
The dramatic increase in sales in an otherwise flat market is part a controlled growth plan Hub Pen put in place nearly four years ago when the company moved into a new facility, reinvested in systems and expanded capacity by more than 50 percent. The growth goes beyond the newly installed machines and added production personnel; all areas of the company have been affected. In addition to increasing staff in customer service, quality control, graphics and management, 15 new field sales reps have been added as well. Today, the company has 225 employees and produces more than 100 million pens annually.
Joe Fleming, Hub Pen president, believes much of the company’s success comes from specializing in one product category. “We concentrate on the quality of writing experience so that using our pens is enjoyable,” he said. “Additionally, I think we have benefited from the utilitarian nature of the writing instruments category; items of daily use haven’t been as affected by the soft economy as many other promotional categories.”
Because of the usefulness of writing instruments, however, there’s more competition than ever before. Fleming credits his staff with building a loyal customer base. “We’re a family business, and everyone in the company takes ownership in their part of the process,” he explained. “And while we have added a number of staff, we have many long-term employees who have been with us 10, 20 even 40 years. I also must acknowledge our reps. We’ve always had a good story to tell, but they have made a tremendous difference in getting the word out to our distributor customers.”
While Fleming is extremely proud to be a member of the Top 40, he says there’s still much to be done. “We’re extremely thankful for the prosperity we have, and we’re thrilled to be a part of this prestigious group of suppliers,” he said. “But being No. 40 only makes us want to work even harder to move up the list.”
